Pathway 1 – New to the Workforce
Earn Your Associate Teacher Permit
This pathway supports individuals interested in pursuing a career in Early Childhood Education who are entering the workforce, or re-entering the workforce after a hiatus, with no prior education or training in Early Childhood Education.

- 12 units of EC/CD (4 LD ECE/CD courses & 2 ENGL courses)
- 50 Days of 3+ Hours On-Site
You Will Receive:
- $2,000 stipend
- Associate Teacher Permit
- 20 hours/week of paid classroom experience
- Free college courses through City College of San Francisco

What is the Early Childhood Apprenticeship Program?
The Early Childhood Apprenticeship Program is a hands-on training initiative designed to prepare individuals for careers in early childhood education. Apprentices receive both college instruction and practical experience in early childhood centers.
Who is eligible to apply?
The program is open to individuals interested in pursuing a career in early childhood education. Applicants should be at least 18 years old and have a high school diploma or equivalent.
What qualifications will I earn?
Participants in the program will earn an Associate Teacher Permit from the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing.
How long does the program last?
The apprenticeship typically lasts for one year during which apprentices will complete a combination of classroom hours and hands-on training.
Are apprentices paid?
Yes, apprentices receive an hourly wage during the time they are working in Early Childhood classrooms. The base rate is $28/hour. You will also receive a $2000 stipend at the completion of your apprenticeship.
What will my responsibilities be as an apprentice?
As an apprentice, you will assist in daily classroom activities, support lead an associate teacher/s, engage with children, and learn about child development and educational practices.
Is there a cost to participate?
There is no cost to the participant; all college and other information is free.

When does the program start?
The program will start in January 2025.
What support is available for apprentices?
Apprentices receive mentorship from experienced educators and access to resources for career development, including workshops and networking opportunities. Additionally, they will receive support from a success coach.
Can I continue my education while in the program?
Yes! Many apprentices choose to continue their education concurrently. We can provide guidance on balancing work and study commitments.
What career opportunities are available after completing the program?
Upon completion, graduates can pursue various roles in early childhood education, including Resource Teacher, Floating Teacher, Associate Teacher, Paraprofessional and other opportunities.
What courses will we take in the Spring 2025?
- CDEV 53 will be taught by Peijue Chen online with Synchronous meetings Wednesday from 6:30pm – 8pm in a 12-week schedule 2/24 to 5/21. This course will be in English.
- CDEV 66 will be taught online by Lisa Quan with synchronous meetings Tuesdays 6:30-8pm for the full semester (2/24 – 5/21). This course will be in English.
